Overview

Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine that has significant anti-anxiety properties. Unlike benzodiazepines, it's not a controlled substance and carries no risk of addiction. At Next Step Psychiatry, we often prescribe hydroxyzine for situational anxiety, as an adjunct to other anxiety treatments, or for anxiety-related sleep difficulties. It can be used "as needed" or on a regular schedule.

How Vistaril / Atarax Works

Hydroxyzine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the brain, which produces calming and sedating effects. It also has some effects on serotonin and acetylcholine receptors. The anti-anxiety effect is relatively rapid, making it useful for acute anxiety situations.

What Is Vistaril / Atarax Used For?

Anxiety (short-term or situational)

Insomnia (anxiety-related)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hydroxyzine addictive?

No, hydroxyzine is not addictive or habit-forming. It's not a controlled substance. This is one reason it's often preferred over benzodiazepines for anxiety, especially for long-term use or in patients with addiction history.

Can I take hydroxyzine every day?

Yes, hydroxyzine can be taken on a regular schedule for ongoing anxiety. However, drowsiness may persist. Many people use it "as needed" for situational anxiety or at bedtime for sleep-related anxiety.

How is hydroxyzine different from Benadryl?

Both are antihistamines, but hydroxyzine has stronger anti-anxiety effects and is specifically used for anxiety. Hydroxyzine also causes less cognitive impairment than diphenhydramine (Benadryl) at equivalent sedating doses.
